Volunteer Stays

At Turadh, we believe in reciprocity — between people and place, and between those who give and those who receive. Our volunteering weeks offer the chance to contribute your time to help tend the landscapes that hold our homes, and allow those homes and the surrounding landscapes to welcoe and restore you in return.

Forestry Volunteer Week

  • Location: Feada Coille, Shieldaig, Torridon (sleeps up to 4)

  • Duration: 5-7 days contributing at least 20 hours per volunteer of hands-on outdoor work

  • Next available dates: May 2026 and November 2026 (there may be flexibility)

Our woodland cabin, Feada Coille, sits on the shore of Loch Shieldaig and is surrounded by one of Scotland's rarest surviving fragments of Caledonian rainforest. The woodland here is a mix of native oak, birch, pine and rowan, draped in mosses and lichens, but also choked by Rhododendron ponticum, an invasive species which starves native plants of light and prevents the forest from regenerating naturally.

Last year, we undertook a large-scale clearance of established rhododendron around Feada Coille. Now we need experienced, skilled hands to stay on top of the regrowth — regular, careful removal is the only way to keep the woodland recovering. Your work will involve clearing small rhododendron plants in the woodland immediately around the cabin.

The stay is open to experienced gardeners or forestry workers. A good level of strength and physical fitness is required and ideally you will be able to bring your own tools — loppers, pruning saw, gloves, waterproofs and sturdy boots. We will provide a site briefing and task guidance on arrival.

Beach Clean Stay

  • Location: Glenelg, Highlands

  • Duration: 5-7 days contributing a minimum of 12 hours per volunteer of beach cleaning

  • Next available dates: November 2026 and February 2027 (there may be flexibility on dates)

Even in the most remote parts of the Scottish coast, marine plastic and debris washes up with every tide. Fishing gear, single-use plastics, and storm-driven litter accumulate on our beautiful beaches causing harm to seabirds, seals, and other wildlife. Every year we offer two beach clean stays, during which volunteers stay in either Nead Bernera or Taigh Whin, on the edge of Glenelg’s beautiful Bernera Beach, one of the most precious stretches of sandy beach in the West Highlands.

This volunteering opportunity is open to individuals, couples, friends or families. Each volunteer is asked to spend at least 2 hours of each day collecting and bagging litter on Bernera beach. A basic level of physical fitness is required and you will need to bring gloves, waterproofs and sturdy boots. We will provide you with beach cleaning grabbers, hoops and bags.

Volunteer Stay Application

Our volunteer stays are open to anyone, but we give priority to people working in Scotland's charity, community and public sectors — the people Turadh exists to support. If that's not you but you have skills and enthusiasm to offer, please still get in touch and tell us about yourself.
